It is the spring of 2020. A viral disease is spreading rapidly across the planet, and Germany is in its first lockdown. Like so many people in the country, we now sit at the kitchen table almost every free evening and spend time with our favorite games. What we keep thinking about is why do we actually need separate dice for every single game, when so many elements in gaming today benefit from digital capabilities? Of course, we all grew up with dice as a familiar part of most board games. And yet, objectively speaking, it sometimes seems like a relic from days gone by. We are about to change that with unidice, the world’s first fully digitalized dice.
The possibilities are endless
What began as a small spark has now, less than a year later, already developed into a powerful blazing flame. It was clear to us very early on that we did not want to simply replace the various real dice with the unidice – the possibilities if offers are too great. Instead, unidice with its six individually configurable HD displays and connection to an extensive mobile app is intended to become the driver for completely new types of gaming experience. It will breathe new life into popular board games and tabletops with matching, interactive dice surfaces. Computer and console games get a real, touchable component. And it creates completely new standards for hybrid gaming when playing fields communicate with the dice and it constantly adapts to the current game. In addition, the unidice also offers numerous opportunities and application scenarios for areas beyond gaming. This turns the unidice into the next generation’s everyday companion, promising fun and excitement for every situation.
In the meantime, a diverse team of creative minds from all over Germany has gathered behind unidice. From scientists to game developers, from entrepreneurs to students: With completely different personal backgrounds, united by our joy in playing and the will to put our ideas into practice, we drive unidice forward and bring completely different perspectives and experiences to the table. Due to our passion for board games, tabletops and gaming, one thing is particularly important to us: the unidice should be developed together and in constant exchange with a committed community, so that it ultimately also offers real added value for players around the world. True to the motto: by players, for players.
Invented in Germany, developed in the Silicon Valley
We all know that no matter how promising and inspiring an idea may sound, it can only succeed in the end with the right partners for technical implementation. For the unidice, we were able to win over a big name in the field of electrical development at an early stage: surfaceink from San Jose, California. The company has been instrumental in groundbreaking innovations such as the iPod Mini, the Microsoft xBox 360 and the first iPhones, and today it serves customers such as Atari, fitbit, Nvidia and many more. The US company accompanies unidice throughout the entire development process – starting with an initial feasibility study and ending with the finished end product for the masses. You will find out more about our cooperation with surfaceink in the coming weeks.
This is how we will turn our once improbable-sounding vision into reality in 2021. With an enthusiastic team, strong partners and above all: with you, the future users of unidice. Here, in our newsroom, we will continuously keep you up to date on the current state of development, new application scenarios for the unidice, but also on other topics from our daily work. It is best to subscribe to our unidice newsletter straight away to ensure you do not miss a post in the future.
